History of Spong.org
Spong.org began in 1999, when Steven decided he wanted to own the domain: spong.org. Previously he used to have websites at Geocities and Asian Avenue. After much tinkering around, he built up spong.org using basic HTML and later some ASP/MS Access.
Around the same time, he also was an undergraduate at Boston University, where they gave him his own website off their cs-people server. He was tired of building static pages and learned to utilize at first Perl and then PHP to build his site with dynamic content.
In 2001, he graduated and wanted to continue building a personal website with dynamic content that would deliver news, his thoughts, and special interests to the world (known as a BLOG today). So built his own Linux box using Red Hat. It was free, it was fun, and most importantly it was a learning experience. With his own dedicated server, he also began using MySQL in conjunction with PHP to help deliver his content better.
In 2002, he opened his server up to members of his family and friends so they too could start their own BLOG. Steven was able to extend his current PHP scripts to his users quit easily, but afters years of development, the code maintenence was growing to be difficult and he knew he needed another platform to which he could develop on and synchronize his updates and changes across accounts.
In late 2004 he began a new project to update and fix his problems using ASP.net. He had been working with C# at work over the past years and wanted to utilize it's power to bring together a new content management system. He also converted much of the PHP functionalities over to C# and the data in the MySQL database to MS SQL Server.
In early 2005, he completed his first release of what he coined as spongblog, Steven's web content management system. It is still very much a work in progress and will always continue to be.
